The Union influences society
Influencing decision-making and legislative preparation
Social decisions have a direct impact on our members’ daily lives, livelihoods, and opportunities. The Union influences decision-making based on the needs and interests of its members.
The lobbying is based on the collection and analysis of information and the goals and proposed measures based on them. These are forwarded to decision-makers, parliamentary groups, civil servants, and other stakeholders to support decision-making. We work constantly to achieve long-term effects.
Looking ahead to the future
Technology and engineering play a key role in solving many societal problems, such as climate change. The Union promotes the implementation of these solutions and contributes to their effectiveness and accessibility.
Societal lobbying means long-term influence, not short-sighted advancement of interests. The goal is to find solutions that benefit society and the Union’s members alike.
Regarding competence
The key objective of the Union of Professional Engineers in Finland is to ensure the quality and development of engineering education, also when assessed on the international scale. Education policy is a key area of influence for the Union. The Finnish higher education system is based on a dual model that combines scientific research and practical skills. This two-way model produces diverse competence for the needs of working life.
Universities of applied sciences play an important role in training practical experts. When we look at things from multiple angles, we can find better solutions. Education must be working life-oriented, timely and of high quality. Working-life connections and practical experience built during one’s studies help lay a strong foundation for a career. At the same time, the amount of training must be balanced with the needs of the labor market.
Enabling success and growth
The Union of Professional Engineers in Finland promotes employment among its member by actively influencing decision-making in the field of industrial policy.
Finland’s employment is built on viable and growing companies – the success of the export industry in particular strengthens our competitiveness. Engineers are needed for success in exports.
Industrial-policy lobbying supports other lobbying efforts by influencing decision-making at both national and EU level. The goal is to ensure the employment of members with the help of well-founded information and expertise. The Union’s own research work supports this advocacy work.
Key focus areas include competence development and the promotion of research, product development, and investments, especially in the changing labor market.
Work enables growth, and growth enables work
Sustainable employment policy is a prerequisite for growth. The Union of Professional Engineers in Finland considers it important to aim for an employment rate of 80 percent in the long term. This is essential for the foundation of a welfare society.

A sustainable employment policy also requires taking sustainable development into account. Climate policy must be fair and employee-oriented. Work must always be profitable, and its conditions must be secured for everyone, including foreign employees.
