Tips from a super recommender

The Union of Professional Engineers in Finland interviewed super recommender Timofei Ulyanov and asked him about his experiences with recommending the Union’s membership.

What made you recommend membership to a colleague/friend?

I strongly believe in the Union and that we can best help ordinary employees when our membership is as large as possible. I also trust that the Union offers tangible benefits for individuals, and this makes it easier for me to recommend membership.

What kinds of situations are good for recommending the Union’s membership? jäsenyyden suosittelu on luontevaa?

I try to raise the issue whenever the conversation turns to working conditions or our industry in general. One thing that is very important to me is that employees who have moved to Finland from abroad are aware of the Union, its work and the benefits of membership. I usually ask them if they have been informed about the local unemployment system and unemployment funds. I tell them that, in practice, unemployment funds constitute unemployment insurance, but they may not be able to help individuals when they face challenges in working life.
Unions, however, are here to support and counsel employees. They also ensure that work is profitable and as pleasant as possible in the long term.

What benefits or experiences do you usually highlight when recommending membership?

The benefits I usually start with are the security provided by the unemployment funds and the Union’s counseling and legal services. Another major benefit is maintaining the position of employees in our society. To conclude, I’ll talk about the events and the cottage benefits.

What is the most common reason that has convinced a new member to join?

The fact that the members can turn to the Union when they face problems has been a great motivator for joining.

What are your top three tips for those who want to recommend membership?

  1. Don’t hesitate to talk about the Union and its benefits. Also mention the unemployment funds. In addition, explain why you chose to join the Union in addition to joining an unemployment fund.
  2. Keep bringing up the topic. You can always leave the Union’s brochure on your desk.
  3. Be active when it comes to the Union as well. When you understand how the Union works and feel that you benefit from being a member of the Union yourself, it is much easier to recommend the Union to another person.

Have you used the Union’s tips for recommending membership? Which one of them has been particularly useful?

Not much, but the list of the benefits offered by the Union has been useful.
